“The Receiver Shovel”
The passing down of knowledge seems to be a lost gift these days for the most part.
For me being a “Grey Beard” and have had the gift of being the ‘’Receiver” of Knowledge has set me
up in the Toolmaker / Machinist trade. For Arron Wende, being the “Receiver” has resulted in the sweet Shovel Chop you see here. Arron has been working with Flat Black of Black Star Engineering. Flat is one of the best old school motor builders around. He has taken Arron under his wings to teach him all the skills needed to pass on the knowledge, a gift that is priceless. Arron’s chop started out as a pretty stock wide glide swing arm FXWG, well that didn’t last long and Arron was off to build what he considers a proper chopper, one that performs as well as it looks. He kept the swing arm front section and added a Fab Kevin hard tail. The front end is a Fury girder that he rebuilt himself. The headlights are two original VW Hella back up lights. The tail light is a 68 sporty unit brazed onto the flat fender. The oil bag is hand bent aluminum, welded up by Flat Black. Arron is a mini drum wheel hoarder, so he had the pieces to make up the 21inch front wheel, the rear is an 18inch alum rim set up. The king Queen seat is a one off KarAsh seat built by Skylar Pope. Arron bent up the tall bitch bar from 9/16 round stock, he also made the foot clutch set up from alum. The brake side is in his own words “junk billet” that works for now, but he has plans on making a custom one in the future. The rabbit bars were made up by Cobra Fabrication out of Ca. to Arron’s specs. Gas tank is a sporty unit lifted in front. Rattle can black for the paint.
The motor is where Flat’s expertise came in. This thing rocks. 88ci duel plugged Shovelhead, Andrews B2 cam, SU carb. Evo rods. Hooked up to a custom sealed rotary top 4 speed trans. With Andrews gears and Fab Kevin shifter.
Most young builders have to learn from trial and error. Arron has done that, along with the great gift of being a “Receiver”.
